Tuakana-Teina

I have struggled this term to provide the same focussed support for my new students as I did with my term one students. I had a large intake group at the beginning and was able to lay strong foundations with them through whole class introductions, drills and lessons. These students made excellent gains very quickly.

However in term 2, I couldn't take the same approach, as the students trickled in and my older students and younger students had very different learning needs. I felt that my newer students were missing out from receiving the same level of literacy input, especially with high frequency words.

As a response I have decided to set up a Tuakana-Teina peer teaching model in the classroom. I am using my 7 newest students and have matched them to my 7 middle students (all at national standards). These students are not my top group, and yet they are doing very well. I think it will benefit their confidence to take on the role of Tuakana with special responsibility to teach their Teina the words on the Word Ring wall.

Forever curious, always learning, deep thinking teacher. I am a Year 5 teacher this year and am enjoying the transition after 3 years with New Entrants.
